Kate Spilsbury of Mere Benefits Completes Orton-Gillingham Certification to Support Dyslexic Adults Navigating Health Insurance
Jacksonville, FL — Kate Spilsbury, RSSA®, CMIP®, and founder of Mere Benefits, has completed 40 hours of Orton-Gillingham training through the inaugural adult-focused class in partnership with the DePaul School of Northeast Florida—an institution dedicated to serving children with dyslexia. This intensive certification equips her with structured literacy strategies that she now hopes to bring into the health insurance world to better support adults—especially those who may be undiagnosed with dyslexia—understand complex insurance information.
As a lifelong learner and advocate, this training was deeply personal for Kate. She suspects she may have undiagnosed dyslexia herself and has seen firsthand the challenges through her daughter, who just completed fourth grade at DePaul. "When you know that 1 in 5 people are dyslexic, it changes how you communicate. It’s not just about breaking down big words—it’s about building trust and clarity for people who may have always felt overwhelmed by paperwork or jargon," said Spilsbury.
Mere Benefits has long emphasized education, empowerment, and personalized guidance when it comes to health insurance—from Medicare and Marketplace plans to group benefits and self-employed coverage. Now, this added certification further reflects Kate’s commitment to making health insurance accessible, not just through product knowledge but through inclusive communication.
Kate is believed to be among the first in the insurance field to pursue Orton-Gillingham training, a methodology typically reserved for reading instruction, and apply it in this innovative way.
