ACA Marketplace

Choosing health insurance shouldn’t feel like a gamble. Simple, Honest, and Designed for you!

With so many options — and so many hidden rules — it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. That’s why at Mere, we simplify the process and help you choose a plan that fits your life, your doctors, and your budget. You deserve coverage that works — without the confusion.

The Problem:

Every year, thousands of people pick health plans based only on price — and later find out their doctors aren’t covered or they owe money at tax time.

Confused About What Income to Report?

It’s one of the most common (and important) questions we get. Use our step-by-step income guide to make sure your application is accurate—and your subsidy is on point.

The Plan:

Here’s the simple truth about Marketplace Networks:

  • HMO (Health Maintenance Organization):
    • Must stay in-network.
    • Referrals usually required for specialists.
    • Cheapest but least flexible.
  • POS (Point of Service):
    • Similar to HMO but with limited out-of-network options.
    • Referrals typically required.
  • EPO (Exclusive Provider Organization):
    • Stay in-network only (except emergencies).
    • No referrals needed for specialists.
    • More flexible than HMO, but still limited.
  • PPO (Preferred Provider Organization):
    • The only type offering true out-of-network benefits.
    • No referrals needed.
    • Important: PPOs are rare on the Marketplace in most states.

Key Takeaway: Only a PPO gives you true out-of-network options — but it may not be available in your area.

EPOs and HMOs dominate most Marketplace offerings.

Understanding Our Role and Compensation

Enrolling in a Marketplace plan can be daunting, but we're here to simplify the process:

  • Expert Assistance: We guide you through plan options, ensuring you understand each choice.

  • No Direct Fees: Our help doesn't cost you anything extra.

  • Insurance Company Compensation: We receive a commission from the insurance company when you enroll, which doesn't increase your premium.

Our mission is to make health insurance accessible and understandable for everyone.

How Subsidies Work:

Most people qualify for a subsidy to help lower their monthly costs — based on estimated income and household size.

Important Reminders:

  • We are not tax advisors or tax experts.

  • Your subsidy is based on what you estimate for your household income — but if you underestimate, you may owe money back at tax time.

  • Married couples must file taxes jointly each year to qualify for subsidies.

  • We help you estimate carefully — but for detailed tax advice, please consult a tax professional.

Important for Veterans and Military Personnel

If you're enrolled in VA health care or TRICARE, you are considered to have qualifying health coverage under the Affordable Care Act. As a result, you're not eligible for premium tax credits (subsidies) for Marketplace plans .

However, your family members who aren't covered by VA or TRICARE may still qualify for subsidies through the Marketplace, depending on their income and household size.

FAQs About ACA Marketplace Plans

Is the ACA Marketplace the same as Obamacare?

Yes! "ACA" (Affordable Care Act) and "Obamacare" are two names for the same program.

Can I keep my doctor?

It depends. Each plan has a different network. We help you check your doctors and prescriptions before you enroll.

What’s the biggest mistake people make choosing a plan?

Choosing based on price alone — without understanding the network rules and limitations. It can leave you with unexpected costs or no coverage for the care you need.

What happens if I guess wrong on my income?

If your income ends up higher than you estimated, you may owe back some or all of your subsidy at tax time. That’s why we encourage careful, conservative income estimates — and recommend talking with a tax advisor if you're unsure.

Do I need to file taxes to get a subsidy?

Yes. And if you’re married, you must file jointly. Filing separately can disqualify you from receiving a subsidy.

Are PPO plans available through the Marketplace?

In some states — but they’re rare. We’ll help you see if a PPO is an option where you live.

Do EPO plans need referrals?

No! You can see specialists directly — but you must stay in-network for coverage.

Will my information be shared if I fill out a form?

Never. When you fill out a form on our site, it only comes to our local office. You won’t get flooded with spam calls or emails from agents around the country.

Think You’re Covered by Medicaid? Not Always.

Programs like Pregnancy Medicaid or Emergency Medicaid don’t count as full coverage.
