How to Enroll in Medicare

STEP 1: Choose How You’ll Apply


Apply Online (Fastest & Easiest)

Visit the official Social Security site:

Takes about 10 minutes to complete

Heads-up: You may run into issues if your personal details are incorrect in SSA’s system. Reach out to us if this happens.

Apply by Phone

Call the Social Security Administration at:

📞 Railroad Retirement? Call 1-877-772-5772

📅 They may complete your application over the phone or schedule a future appointment. Expect mailed forms and possible processing delays.

Apply In Person

Visit your local Social Security office. Find one here:

💡 Tip: Ask for written confirmation showing you’ve applied. You’ll need this to apply for a Medicare Supplement or Drug Plan.

Delayed Enrollment? You’ll Need Two Forms


If you delayed Medicare because of employer coverage, here’s what you’ll need:

Submit these together to your local SSA office or upload them to your SSA account.

Do I have to be receiving Social Security to apply for Medicare?

No. You can apply for Medicare even if you’re delaying Social Security income benefits.

What if I miss my enrollment period?

You may need to wait for the General Enrollment Period (Jan–Mar) and could face penalties. Reach out so we can review your options.

How long does it take to get my Medicare card?

Typically 2–3 weeks after processing. Be sure to apply early.

I’m helping a spouse or parent—can you guide us both?

Yes. Each person needs to enroll separately, but we can help you coordinate both enrollments.
