Marketplace Scams Are Everywhere This Year: Here’s How to Protect Yourself
Open Enrollment brings opportunities — and unfortunately, it also brings scams.
If you’ve been getting calls, texts, or emails promising “$0 health plans” or “government-approved insurance,” you’re not alone.
Here’s what you need to know to protect yourself and your family this season.
The Rise of Look-Alike Plans
Many ads you see online or on social media promote health plans that sound like Marketplace coverage but aren’t. These plans might:
Not cover pre-existing conditions
Exclude prescription drugs
Limit hospital coverage
Require you to pay thousands before they cover anything
They use words like “PPO plans”, “ACA approved” or “federally backed” — but those phrases don’t guarantee compliance with the Affordable Care Act.
If it’s not listed on Healthcare.gov or through a licensed Marketplace agent, it’s not an ACA Marketplace plan.
Signs It’s a Scam or Look-Alike Plan
Be cautious if:
The caller refuses to identify the insurance company or license number
They pressure you to “sign up right now”
You’re told you don’t need to provide income information
They ask for your Social Security number or payment info before showing plan details
Real Marketplace agents are licensed and verified, and will always disclose the insurance company, coverage terms, and subsidy process.
How to Stay Safe
Work with a trusted local agent — not a random 1-800 number.
Verify your enrollment through Healthcare.gov or your agent’s certified Marketplace link.
Ask questions. A real professional will help you understand, not pressure you.
Report fraud at reportfraud.ftc.gov if you suspect a scam.
The Bottom Line
If a deal sounds too good to be true — it probably is.
