Denied or Priced Out of Health Insurance
You’ve tried to get health insurance — maybe through work, maybe through the Marketplace — but the cost feels impossible. Or maybe you’ve lost coverage altogether.
When you’re in that situation, it can feel like you’re out of options.
But the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has a little-known provision that could give you another way forward: hardship exemptions.
What’s a Hardship Exemption?
A hardship exemption is special permission from the federal government that says:
“We recognize your situation makes it unreasonable for you to pay for standard health insurance right now.”
If approved, a hardship exemption can:
Allow you to buy a Catastrophic health plan — even if you’re over 30.
Open up lower-cost coverage options.
Bridge the gap while you get back on your feet.
Situations That May Qualify as a Hardship
Hardship exemptions aren’t one-size-fits-all, but some common qualifying situations include:
Loss of coverage (employer plan ended, Marketplace plan cancelled, etc.)
Facing eviction or foreclosure
Medical debt for necessary care
Domestic violence
Death of a close family member
Unexpected increase in expenses due to caring for a sick, disabled, or aging family member
Other serious financial or personal challenges

Custom HTML/CSS/JAVASCRIPTWait for the federal government to review your request.
If approved, you’ll get an Exemption Certificate Number (ECN) — which you’ll enter when applying for coverage.
Why This Can Make a Big Difference
Without an exemption, your only options might be plans with premiums you simply can’t afford.
With an exemption, you can choose a lower-cost plan that still protects you from major medical bills — giving you breathing room while you recover financially.
